There’s a reason that the staffer who schedules your dental appointment asks you to come in a little early. A thorough dental exam begins with the important patient background information that only you can provide.

When you get to the office you will be asked to fill out a form listing all the medications that have been prescribed for you recently or for past illnesses. The data is relevant to the treatment that your dentist may recommend so take your time and make sure to answer all pertinent questions on the form. Once the preliminaries have been dealt with a dental assistant will direct you to the inner office and be sure that you are comfortable and ready to meet the dentist.

The first part of your exam will be a tooth by tooth evaluation of your general dental health. The dentist will be looking for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease that may be in the initial stages when obvious symptoms have yet to surface. Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to save a patient from serious complication. This phase of the exam can also determine if any previous dental work may be in need of repair or replacement.

If the exam determines that a procedure is necessary to maintain your oral health or If a follow-up appointment is advised the scheduling staff will do their best to adapt it to your agenda.
